Strabag delivers steelworks in Vyksa, Russia

ZAO Strabag, the Russian subsidiary of Central and Eastern Europe's largest construction company Strabag SE, delivered a € 320 million sheet steel rolling mill to client United Metallurgical Company on 25 November 2011. The total investment of United Metallurgical Company is approximately USD 1.5 billion.

Strabag was commissioned in 2008 to build the facility including assembly of the machinery and plant equipment. The contract comprised the main production facility with a length of 1 km and a gross floor area of more than 100,000 square metres plus the plant's water treatment facilities, the distribution network for energy and materials, the administrative building as well as roads and rails.

With Strabag as general contractor, more than 100 international subcontractors and at times more than 3,000 persons were at work on the project. Based on extremely difficult geotechnical conditions, work was begun with the backfill of some 5 million cubic metres of earth. More than 10,000 piles were driven, and over 200,000 cubic metres of reinforced concrete and 40,000 tonnes of steel were used. The unique high-tech Plate Mill 5000 production facility weighing more than 40,000 tonnes consists, among other things, of an oven, a rolling mill as well as cooling and shearing machines. The sheet steel to be produced will be used, among others, in the construction of various structures such as pipelines, ships and bridges.
