Malmö Central Station receives Brunel Award

Malmö Central Station, which Danish engineering company Ramboll has helped modernise, has picked up a prestigious Brunel Award. One of the most highly-prized honours in the international infrastructure and railway sector, the Brunel Award was presented during a recent ceremony in Washington.

The awards are given by an international jury of designers and architects every three years in recognition of quality design in railway infrastructure, rolling stock and graphic arts. Since its inauguration in 1985, an award has never been bestowed on a Swedish construction project until now. Twenty out of a total of 150 worldwide entries submitted recieved an award, eight of them being train stations.

The project drew on Ramboll's cross-border multidisiciplinary skills. Ramboll in Sweden designed the electricity, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems for the station. The lighting design for the scheme was undertaken by Ramboll in Denmark. The electrical engineering work was complicated by the fact that the station needed to remain fully operational throughout the work. A number of interim solutions were therefore put in place to maintain the services available to travelers.

Malmö Central Station is the third largest and second busiest railway station in Sweden offering a variety of amenities including restaurants and shops for travelers. The station's recent modernisation includes improved connectivity for traffic travelling towards Copenhagen, installation of a distinctive glass façade, and 225 CCTV-cameras that monitor the station building and its surroundings. The project was conducted jointly with Jernhusen, the Swedish Transport Administration, SJ and Skånetrafiken. Metro Architects designed the buildings.

The station is expected to be fully completed by the end of 2012.
