| Atkins’ projects scoop double honours at international awards Atkins, the largest engineering consultancy in the UK, has scooped double honours at this year's MIPIM Asia event with Gold and Bronze awards for architectural and masterplanning projects in China and Western Asia. The judges of the MIPIM Asia Awards, which celebrate outstanding real estate developments across the region, named the Atkins-designed Intercontinental Shimao Wonderland Hotel in China as a Gold winner at this year's ceremony, whilst a Bronze award was given to Atkins' other winning project – the masterplan for Baku White City in Azerbaijan. The Intercontinental Shimao Wonderland Hotel in Songjiang, China won the top honour in the Chinese Futura Projects category. Atkins is providing architectural design for the 5-star resort, built into the side of a disused water-filled quarry. The spectacular project has sustainability at its core, with a distinct emphasis on low carbon design and integration with the surrounding environment. Atkins' other winner project, the masterplan for Baku White City in Azerbaijan, was named Bronze winner in the Central and Western Asia Futura Projects category. The 221 ha Baku White City project is one of the largest regeneration schemes in the country and is set to revitalise Baku City's former industrial district into a bright, modern city centre. The city will incorporate commercial, retail and leisure space, public transport systems and housing for more than 50, 000 people, and will also feature two Atkins-designed signature buildings. The development aims to act as a catalyst for regeneration in the region by attracting investment and employment opportunities. The honour comes only weeks after the project won the Emerging Markets award at the prestigious Cityscape Global event in Dubai. write your comments about the article :: © 2011 Construction News :: home page |
