ABB to modernize Ukrainian power grid

Swiss engineering group ABB has won an order worth more than $23 million from NPC Ukrenergo, Ukraine's national power grid operator, to supply more than eighty sets of live tank circuit breakers rated at 110, 330, 500 and 750 kilovolts (kV) to be installed in seven 750 kV transmission substations.

The circuit breakers will replace air blast-type circuit breakers that have been in operation for nearly four decades. The circuit breakers will be replaced in three phases, starting in 2011 and to be completed in 2014. ABB will also supply control cabinets with bay control devices for the circuit breakers, along with an online condition monitoring system built on the company's latest substation automation technology.

Earlier this year, ABB signed a contract with Ukrenergo to supply 44 sets of 750 kV SF6 circuit breakers. Both projects are part of Ukraine's program for modernization and upgrade of its power transmission network.
