Skanska Safety Week – to start on Monday, October 17

On Monday 17 October Skanska launches the world's largest event on workplace safety organized by a company, Skanska Safety Week 2011. At more than 10,000 worksites in 18 countries will Skanska's 53,000 employees and tens of thousands of subcontractors, suppliers and business partners be involved in activities focused on safety.

This is Skanska's 7th annual Safety Week and this year it will focus on "Empowerment". Everyone at a work site has a responsibility to contribute to a safe working environment. By adding ideas and take action at the site everyone helps make sure that we all come home safely after a day at work.

In the business plan for 2011-2015 Skanska aims to eliminate 3 out of 4 lost time accidents by 2015. It is a demanding task but over the last 6 years the lost time accident rate for employees has been reduced by 50 percent worldwide.

There will be thousands of activities held during the safety week at worksites and offices throughout Skanska. These will involve Skanska senior managers, employees as well as subcontractors and business partners. With the theme this year of Empowerment there will be a focus on how Skanska can create the safety culture that encourages everyone to participate in improving safety at their workplace.

The activities include planning to avoid or manage risks, work at height, rescue techniques and fire training. There will also be activities focusing on health, such as training in first aid and blood testing.
