| Mott MacDonald to provide consultancy services in Sudan and Yemen Mott MacDonald's international development consultancy, Euroconsult Mott MacDonald, has been appointed by the World Bank to provide consultancy services for a project which will assess the impacts of climate change on the coastal communities of the Southern Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden in Djibouti, Sudan and Yemen. The results will enable governments, key stakeholders and local communities to better understand and prepare for the impacts of climate change, and will provide the basis for improved investments in the coastal regions. The coastal areas around the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden are vitally important as a large percentage of the Djiboutian, Sudanese and Yemeni population live there and many depend on coastal and marine resources for their livelihood. These areas also include several coral formations that are globally important due to their unique marine biodiversity. Climate change will exacerbate environmental and social problems in the coastal areas. Key concerns include sea level rise, land loss, changes in coastal storms and flooding and beach erosion. The consulting services include conducting a Transboundary Diagnostic Analysis to assess the coastal vulnerability of the three countries to the biological and physical impacts of climate change. Adaptation measures for the coastal ecosystems and a range of alternative livelihood schemes and toolkits will also be developed. These will help governments' agencies, non-governmental organisations and local communities to address the identified impacts and provide recommendations for climate proofing future investments in different sectors. In addition, the consultancy will develop and implement awareness raising programmes for the different stakeholders.
