US engineering and construction giant URS Corp announced that its information technology business – URS-Apptis – has been awarded a Blanket Purchase Agreement (BPA) contract from the General Services Administration (GSA) to provide Risk Management Framework (RMF) services to improve levels of information systems and information security across the government.

Work performed will include tasks such as reviewing and updating existing documents, and preparing new security plans, application system input and output documents, certification and accreditation packages, user guides, operational procedures, historical logs and mission statements. The work will be performed in compliance with all current National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS), Office of Management and Budget (OMB), and other laws, regulations and requirements for the protection and security of information technology.

RMF, as defined by the NIST, integrates the essential steps in the risk management process to help organizations make informed decisions regarding security of information systems.

Through use of the RMF, URS will provide a structured process to identify and assess the risks to information systems and take steps to reduce risk. The work will enhance existing processes and eliminate duplication of effort across government agencies, which will increase the availability of expertise and resources to fulfill mission-related requirements and maintain focus. URS also will provide strategy development, life-cycle security requirements and costs, facilities security and management, and application system support services. In addition, the Company will provide infrastructure support certification and accreditation, as well as IT and business support personnel.
