Natural ventilation and daylighting systems

JCoSS, a new Jewish Community Secondary School in Barnet that is styled in plan by RHWL Architects to resemble a hand, with teaching wings radiating like fingers, to bring natural ventilation and natural daylight to classrooms. Natural ventilation was conceived at the planning stage as a perimeter scheme, however, to comply with ventilation, temperature and acoustic requirements, contractor Ardmore Construction reviewed alternatives and a Monodraught roof-mounted strategy was approved using energy-free Windcatcher Sola-boost systems. These ensured compliance with the ventilation requirements of PPE and the temperature requirements of BB 93 and BB 101, as well as meeting acoustic requirements due to the classrooms facing a railway line.

Most of the thirty-nine Windcatcher units are installed in the classrooms of the three, 2-storey teaching wings where a clever double stacking system enables each unit to serve first and ground floor classrooms that are located one above the other.

The acoustically-lined Monodraught systems also solved a requirement to control noise from nearby railway lines and eliminate cross talk between classrooms caused by the double stacking arrangement. Monodraught Sunpipe natural daylight systems are also installed in some top floor classrooms.

JCoSS School achieved a Breeam 'Very Good' rating and a bid for 'Healthy Schools' status was successful in all four categories.

Windcatcher, Sola-boost and Sunpipe are registered trademarks owned by Monodraught Limited.
