Wienerberger implements future-oriented nearly zero energy standard

Austrian brickmaker Wienerberger has now taken another important step with the July 2011 start of construction on an e4 Brickhouse 2020 in Austria – a future-oriented model house for sustainable construction with bricks, which is being built together with a private investor. The e4 Brickhouse 2020 already meets the requirements of the EU's energy performance of buildings directive for 2020 (Directive 2010/31/EU).

The comprehensive approach of the e4 Brickhouse concept is based on four key factors: a massive energy-efficient building envelope made of clay blocks, renewable energy sources, affordable construction and energy costs, and unique living quality.

The e4 Brickhouse 2020 is being constructed together with an ambitious private investor and the Wienerberger MassivWertHaus contractor Franz Schiller. This nearly zero energy house made of clay blocks already meets the requirements of the EU's energy performance of buildings directive for 2020.

The Brickhouse 2020 was planned and will be built by the Wienerberger MassivWertHaus contractor Franz Schiller. The company coordinated the individual wishes of the private investor with the technical requirements, including the southern alignment of the solar areas, and the specific site requirements like the positioning and size of the house.

The energetic planning, calculation and evaluation were performed by Prof. Klaus Krec of the TechnicalUniversityin Viennaand by AIT Austrian Institute of Technology. The AIT institute will monitor the house for two years after completion to collect reliable data on energy consumption and energy production as well as factors like the quality of the interior room air, humidity etc. The e4Brickhouse 2020 project is subsidized by the Austrian Federal Climate and Energy Fund as part of the "New Energies 2020" research and technology program.

Construction started in July 2011. Completion and occupancy by the private investor are scheduled by mid-2012.
