Atkins helps Texas become North America’s leading wind power state

Texas, North America, is on track to produce more wind power than any other US state after Atkins submitted a series of successful environmental submissions to the regional planning body, the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUC).

Under the $5 billion Competitive Renewable Energy Zones (CREZ) programme, eight transmission service providers were authorised to construct 46 new electric transmission lines (most at 345 kV) to deliver wind energy from rural areas to urban centres. In total, the CREZ projects are expected to increase Texas' wind generation capacity to around 18,500 MW by 2014.

Atkins supported five of the eight service providers with their multiple power line applications. To date, applications for 23 of the power lines have been submitted. Of these, applications for 21 of the lines have been assessed, 19 have gone forward after meeting all of the criteria, and two decisions are pending.
