Fundación Iberdrola grants scholarships to join team at Prado

Spanish company Iberdrola, the world's biggest producer of renewable energy, said the Fundación Iberdrola has reached a decision in the first edition of its scholarship scheme for Training and Research in Restoration, which will enable two young graduates in Restoration, with Painting as their specialism, to take part in the work carried out in this field by the Prado National Museum.

This scheme, which has the ultimate aim of completing the training of future experts and promoting research in the field of restoration, was set up under the auspices of the agreement signed by the two bodies last year, according to which the Fundación Iberdrola became a protective member of the national gallery.

One of the scholarship recipients will be assigned to the Painting specialism in the Prado's Restoration Area, taking part in the processes of conservation and restoration of the pictorial works in the Museum's collection. This person will also be given the opportunity to take part in drafting reports and provide assistance at the temporary exhibitions organised by the gallery.

The other recipient in this scholarship scheme will be assigned to the technical studio in the Restoration Area. They will be involved in the processes for scanning images and preparing materials for X-rays, as well as collaborating in the organisation and digitisation of the Prado Museum's Technical Archive.

The two researchers selected for the scholarships will receive a financial grant of €15, 000 from the Fundación Iberdrola, which will be paid out during the course of the 10 months that the scholarship lasts.

The almost 40 applications submitted were assessed first of all by the Museum's Restoration Area and then by two study and assessment committees set up for each scholarship, chaired respectively by the Assistant Director of Conservation at the Prado National Museum, Gabriele Finaldi, and by the Head of the gallery's Restoration Area, Pilar Sedano. The selected recipients also had to provide evidence of their merits and attend an interview in person.

One of the most significant roles of the Prado National Museum is to guarantee the protection and conservation of the Spanish Historical Heritage properties assigned to it. Most of this work is done by the Museum's Restoration Area, which consists of 31 experts from different interdisciplinary departments that work together on preventive conservation, study and analysis and when necessary, on the restoration of the works of art.

The Museum's Plan of Action for 2009-2012 contemplates the restoration of several masterpieces, including for example Dürer's Adam and Eve, which were presented in November of last year with a special installation, as the first project sponsored by the Fundación Iberdrola.
