| Flatiron wins California Transportation Foundation Project of the Year awards Flatiron, one of the US's largest transportation and infrastructure contractors, has won two California Transportation Foundation 2010 Project of the Year awards. The first award, in the Freeway/Expressway category, is for the Interstate 5 Gateway Project. The second award, in the Aviation category, is for the San Diego International Airport Taxiway "C" Rehabilitation. Flatiron's Jeff Turner, Rick Finken and Andy Boswell accepted the awards on behalf of Flatiron at the 22nd Annual CTF Transportation Awards luncheon honoring excellence in California transportation on June 15 in Sacramento. Flatiron reconstructed a two-mile portion of I-5 from Orangethorpe to Artesia Avenue in Buena Park, Calif. The $193 million project, the third largest highway construction contract in the California Department of Transportation's history, is comprised of six bridge improvements, both widening and complete reconstruction, three miles of retaining walls to accommodate the extended right-of-way on either side of the existing highway, and a storm water pumping plant. The CTF Freeway/Expressway Project of the Year award also recognized other team members including Orange County Transportation Authority, Caltrans District 12, CALTROP, Psomas, URS, TRC, BBCI, ARCADIS, City of Buena Park, and Union Pacific Railroad. Flatiron's rehabilitation of San Diego International Airport's Taxiway "C" included surface prep, followed by the full-depth removal of the taxiway's asphalt concrete and concrete pavement, and the placement of new asphalt concrete, concrete pavement and storm drains. During construction, Flatiron crews worked to accommodate the country's busiest single-runway airport, which continued receiving air traffic throughout the project, as planes literally moved through and around the construction site. The eight-phase project began construction in 2009 and was completed on time in July 2010.
