| Black & Veatch leader to deliver the Singapore Water Lecture Dr. James Barnard, winner of the Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize 2011, was honored by Black & Veatch with a special celebration prior to his departure to receive the award at Singapore International Water Week (SIWW) on Tuesday, 5 July and deliver the highly anticipated Singapore Water Lecture. Barnard, a Global Practice and Technology Leader for Advanced Biological Treatment at Black & Veatch, began his professional journey in his native South Africa and arid Namibia in the 1970s where challenges such as eutrophication were having severe impacts on the countries' river systems and waterways. Inspired to find a more cost-effective and environmentally sustainable solution, he explored the possibility of removing phosphorus and nitrogen from used water through biological means only. The result was the invention of the Biological Nutrient Removal (BNR) process. Today, variations of the BNR process have been implemented in hundreds of facilities across North America, Europe and Africa. The Lee Kuan Yew Prize recognises outstanding contributions towards solving global water problems by either applying technologies or implementing policies and programmes that benefit humanity. Barnard stood out from a record of 72 high-quality nominations received from 29 countries this year, to become the fourth recipient of the Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize – one of the highlights of the Singapore International Water Week. Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore's first Prime Minister and recognized as the nation's Founding Father, will present the award. Barnard will deliver a one-hour lecture on his life's work and insights to 1,500 government, business and academic leaders from around the world. write your comments about the article :: © 2011 Construction News :: home page |
