Ramboll wins Fredericia C urban development competition

Ramboll and the Dutch companies KCAP Architects&Planners and Fakton have won the international competition for the urban development plan "FredericiaC" in the Danish city of Fredericia.

The plan for the 21 ha brownfield site at the seafront of Fredericia will expand the existing inner city by 25%. The design proposal includes a new canal structure and a new park, and is characterised by clear historic considerations for the city's existing buildings and maritime environment. The new urban area is planned to become CO2 neutral.

The FredericiaC urban development initiative is a partnership between the Local Authority of Fredericia and Realdania Urban Development. The jury highlighted the winner proposal as "a very strong unifying physical concept with a regional appeal which is intended to increase the area's attractiveness, attention and value." Especially the proposed canal structure that will strengthen the city's relation to the water is valued by the jury.

The multidisciplinary design proposal includes traffic, parking, sustainability, soil contamination and environmental risks related to the neighbouring harbour activities and oil terminal. With suggested investments in sustainable energy supply from wind turbines, district heating and sea water cooling, the whole development is planned to become CO2 neutral.

Ramboll, KCAP and Fakton look forward to working on the development plan which is to be presented in the first half of 2012.
