Mott MacDonald to secure a cable car for London, UK

Mott MacDonald has been assisting Transport for London (TfL) as engineering support consultant and technical advisor for the cable car in London, which will run across the River Thames connecting Greenwich and the Royal Victoria Docks carrying up to 2,500 passengers per hour each way.

Mott MacDonald's role involved specialist engineering support on route options, building services, utilities and design coordination. The consultancy also managed ground investigations, carried out an environmental impact assessment and acted as TfL's technical advisor during procurement of the design and build contractor. In this role Mott MacDonald assisted TfL during the prequalification process and helped develop employer's requirements and tender evaluation criteria. The consultancy also reviewed and advised on programme and construction methods and coordinated health and safety requirements. The team included Neil Thompson, an independent engineering design management consultant and former engineering design manager for the London Eye project, as chief technical advisor.

Mott MacDonald worked closely with the architectural design team led by Wilkinson Eyre Architects with structural engineers Expedition, lighting consultants Speirs & Major and landscape architects EDCO. This team was employed by TfL following an architectural competition and developed the scheme that gained planning consent and formed the basis of the tendered design.

The project is due for completion in summer 2012.
