Lend Lease to construct a new gateway to UTS and the Sydney CBD

The University of Technology, Sydney, has appointed Australian property group Lend Lease to provide pre-construction services for the Broadway Building, a new landmark defining the southern edge of the UTS City Campus.

The prominent location and distinctive design of the building – a new home for the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology – will make it a gateway to the campus, said UTS Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Resources) Patrick Woods.

In its pre-construction services role, Lend Lease will work closely with the university, Australian architects Denton Corker Marshall and a multi-disciplinary consultant team to ensure design, engineering and sustainability challenges can be resolved in a cost-effective manner.

Specific challenges posed by the 44,000 square-metre building's design include the unique aluminium "binary" screens (perforated with computer binary code) that will define the façade, the targeted five-star Green Star rating, and the large, light-filled atrium that will run through the heart of the building.

During the pre-construction services phase, Lend Lease will tender all trade packages and submit a final lump sum price to the university. Subject to UTS acceptance of this final offer, Lend Lease will enter into a contract for the construction of the building commencing in early 2012, with the building complete by late 2013.
