First stretch of Sacyr’s Vallenar–Caldera concession opened

Chilean President Sebastián Piñera opened the first 64.6 km stretch of the motorway from Copiapó to Vallenar. This is part of the 221 km Vallenar–Caldera concession and has nearly 210 million euros' worth of planned investment. It was awarded to the Spanish group Sacyr Concesiones in late 2008 and is currently being built by it.

The Vallenar–Caldera project is 221 km long, the newly-opened stretch measuring 64.6 km. This stretch required investment of nearly 71 million euros and will give Sacyr Concesiones the first tolls. It is hoped that the finished road will be opened to the public towards the end of November.

The stretch has several footbridges, includes an emergency area, a truckstop and SOS boxes every 3 km. These will provide it with similar standards of comfort and services to the rest of Route 5, which runs from La Serena to Puerto Montt.
