Peter Parler Award 2011

What the stonemasonry trade does to preserve our cultural heritage is shown by the results of the competition for the Peter Parler Award 2011. The first winners are Eduard Schnell of Fridingen and Gerhard Roth of Augsburg. Four money prizes and commendations will be presented at Stone+tec Nürnberg 2011 on 23 June.

Mainly encouragingly high quality was the jury's verdict on the entries for the Peter Parler Award 2011. The award is organized by the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz (German Historic Preservation Trust) and the Bundesverband Deutscher Steinmetze (Association of German Stonemasons) and presented for special achievements by the stonemasonry trade in the field of restoration and historic preservation.

The first prizes of 5,000 euros each go to master stonemason Eduard Schnell from the stonemasonry firm of the same name in Fridingen and master stonemason and restorer Gerhard Roth of Augsburg. The stonemasonry workshop Schnell has secured, cleaned and enhanced the baroque sculptures of Hercules and Samson in Karlsruhe in an exemplary manner; they were copied by Frank Tarrach, stone sculptor at Schnell. The prudent restoration, reconstruction and documentation as well as the expert transportation of the figures and the sculptural craftsmanship all deserve praise, according to the jury.

Roth receives the award for his outstandingly prepared and executed renovation of the balcony of Schaezler House in Augsburg. He has not only saved the original material of a baroque balcony, but above all prevented serious damage to the building that would have been unavoidable in the originally planned reconstruction.

The second prize worth 3,000 euros goes to Claus Dieter Bachmann, Managing Director of Bachmann & Wille GmbH, Göttingen, and Jörg Lehmann, Bauhütte Quedlinburg, for the reconstruction of the main entrance steps with portal and portico at Drachenburg Castle in Königswinter.

The jury awarded the third prize of 2,000 euros to master stonemason Christian Späte from the stonemasonry firm of the same name in Zeitz for the successful reconstruction of the rococo staircase of Kurländer Palace in Dresden.

Commendations go to master stonemason Arthur Zimmer from the stonemasonry firm Halbig in Mellrichstadt for the enhancement and reerection of the war memorial with angel in Unsleben, to stonemasonry firm Jürgen Poppitz of Horb-Bildechingen for the restoration of the oriel at Hohenmühringen Castle, and to stonemasonry firm Markus Glöckner of Neunkirchen for renovation work on the Old Abbey in Mettlach.

The award winners will receive their prizes at a ceremony at Stone+tec Nürnberg at 11a.m. on Thursday, 23 June 2011. Stone+tec Nürnberg 2011, the 17th International Trade Fair Natural Stone and Stoneprocessing Technology, takes place in the Exhibition Centre Nuremberg from 22–25 June.
