| ABB wins power order in Brazil Swiss engineering group ABB has won an order worth $34 million to supply two air-insulated switchgear (AIS) substations and expand three existing substations for CHESF (São Francisco's Hydroelectric Company), a power generation and transmission utility in northeastern Brazil and part of the Electrobras Group. The order was booked in the first quarter. As part of the turnkey project, ABB is responsible for the design, engineering, supply, and commissioning of the substations. The new Extremoz 230 kV (kilovolt) substation will be equipped with SVC (static var compensator) units to facilitate the integration of renewable energy from wind farms. They will also enhance voltage stability and system performance during contingencies. SVC is part of ABB's family of FACTS (flexible alternating current transmission systems), which enhance the capacity, security and flexibility of the power network, providing an important contribution to the development of smart grids. The new João Câmara 230/69 kV substation will be equipped with capacitor banks to reduce electricity losses and improve the network's power factor - an indicator of the usable power available in the grid. ABB will also extend the existing 230 kV substations Açu II, Mossoró II and Paraíso. Power transformers, high- and medium-voltage equipment, including circuit breakers, instrument transformers, surge arresters, as well as telecommunication systems are among the other main products that will be supplied. ABB will also install substation automation systems compliant with the global IEC 61850 standard and equipped with the latest protection and control products.
