FCC wins railway contract in Algeria

Spain-based Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas (FCC) in consortium with Algerian Groupe ETRHB HADDAD, has secured a contract to build 66 km of railway line worth 1.232 billion euro. The contract was awarded by the Algerian government, through Anesrif (Agence National de Études et Suivi de Réalisations des Investissements Ferroviaires). This is the second railway contract awarded to FCC in Algeria following the contract obtained in May 2010 for over 930 million euro.

The new line will link the city of Tlemcen (500 km west of Algiers) with the frontier post at Akkid Abbas and will form part of the planned line connecting Oued Tlélat to the Moroccan border. The construction of this line is set for completion in 48 months.

The first two-thirds of the route in western Algeria crosses uneven terrain and will require the construction of 34 viaducts and 9 tunnels. Tunnels and viaducts will account for over 30% of the total length of this section of line.

The contract is for the construction of a double-tracked electrified line for a maximum rated speed of 220 km/h. The contract also covers signalling and telecommunications systems and the construction of a new passenger station in Maghnia, a city 450 km west of Algiers.

This rail project is part of Algeria's economic development programme for 2009-2014, which has a budget of approximately 150 billion dollars (around 110 billion euro) and is focused on infrastructure.
