Parsons bridge project reaches major milestone

As equity partner and lead designer for Audubon Bridge Constructors, Parsons announced that the John James Audubon Bridge recently reached a significant milestone with the completion of the cable-stayed bridge spans over the Mississippi River in Louisiana.

The $347 million John James Audubon Bridge is part of Louisiana's Transportation Infrastructure Model for Economic Development (TIMED) Program and involves the construction of a new 1,583-foot cable-stayed span designed for a 100-year life with 2 miles of approach spans, 7 additional bridges, and approximately 12 miles of new roadway. The superstructure for the cable-stayed span comprises steel plate girders made from Grade 50 weathering steel.

Parsons incorporated several innovations into this project, including the elimination of sunken caissons by substituting tip-grouted drilled shafts and the use of galvanized strand for additional corrosion protection of the stay cables.

As the Louisiana Department of Transportation's first design-build project, the John James Audubon Bridge is the longest cable-stayed bridge in the Americas. It connects Pointe Coupee and West Feliciana parishes in south-central Louisiana, and it will replace an existing ferry between the communities of New Roads and St. Francisville. The bridge is anticipated to open to traffic this year.
