| BAU announces key themes BAU 2011, which takes place from 17 to 22 January at the New Munich Trade Fair Centre, is not only the top trade fair for the sector, it is also an important gathering of all those involved in the world of building. Thousands of building professionals come along to congresses, conferences, symposia and award ceremonies, for in-depth information on the various segments within the sector, to engage in discussions about architecture and the art of building, and to learn from each other. The Award for Product Innovation promotes renovation and modernisation work, an area which is still outstripping work on new builds. This innovations award, sponsored by the Bundesarbeitskreis Altbauerneuerung (BAKA), a working group on R&M, highlights product ideas and designs for specific application in the renovation, refurbishment and modernisation of existing buildings. The competition is open to all exhibitors at BAU. Award for Innovation in Architecture and Building: This competition is being organised by the architectural journal AIT and xia Intelligente Architektur. It is open to designers and manufacturers of innovative products from all segments of the building sector. 1:1 Award for 'The First House': In cooperation with BAU the Berlin-based architectural journal Bauwelt is putting on the seventh edition of its 1:1 Award. Open to architects and landscape architects, the competition seeks to find outstanding examples of first works. The prize-winning submissions will be exhibited on the gallery at the West Entrance. 'Built on IT Building jobs with a future': This award is presented to IT-supported processes and solutions that optimise the job of building. It is sponsored by the German Ministry of Economics and Technology, in cooperation with the Federation of the German Construction Industry (Hauptverband der deutschen Bauindustrie), the German Federation of Building Trades (Zentralverband des deutschen Baugewerbes), the industry association Bauen-Agrar-Umwelt and BAU 2011. DETAIL Award 2010 'Aesthetics and Construction': The award is being organised by the architectural journal DETAIL, in cooperation with the Bavarian Chamber of Architects and the Architectural Society of China. It is presented to completed buildings that demonstrate excellent use of well designed and innovative details within an outstanding overall design. ArchiWorld Academy: In cooperation with the online portal Archi-Europe, BAU 2011 will be the occasion for the official start of the ArchiWorld Academy. This new competition, which runs for two years, is aimed at architectural students from all over the world. A jury of 12 top international architects will be adjudicating the entries. The winners will be announced at BAU 2013. WAN Product Awards: These famous product awards are being presented at BAU for the first time in 2011, in cooperation with the British online portal 'World Architecture News', which is organising the competition. Awards will be presented to new and innovative products in the building industry. Building Material Oscars: This famous award, sponsored by the Duisburg-based publishers Wohlfarth, is being presented at BAU for the 15th time. The winners are chosen by a vote of builders merchants in Germany. The key criterion in selecting the winners is the quality of market partnership with the builders merchants. Bavarian Engineers Prize: The Bavarian Chamber of Engineers holds a competition every two years to find outstanding engineering work in the field of building construction. The theme for the 2011 award is 'Integrated design and construction: Innovation Cooperation Realisation'. 'Building for the Future sustainable, energy-efficient and innovative' On the very first day of the fair there will be an international congress, organised by the German Transport Ministry, on this top theme at BAU. Transport Minister Ramsauer will be opening the congress. Buildings of the Future is the title of a two-day congress which is being organised by the German Ministry of Economics and Technology, consisting of a research symposium with accompanying exhibition. The event presents concepts, technologies and planning methods for the buildings of the future. A highlight will be the solar house of the University of Applied Sciences of Rosenheim, which won second place in the 'Solar Decathlon Europe' competition in Madrid. The house is being built on the open-air site at BAU, where visitors can come along and view it. Nanotechnology and bionics are cross-industry technologies that can also bring benefit to the building industry. And that is exactly the theme of a two-day congress which is being organised by the German Ministry of Economics. In a congress and four trade forums participants can learn about applications for these innovative technologies. The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Nachhaltiges Bauen DGNB is presenting the latest developments in its certification system for sustainable buildings i.e. for buildings that are particularly environmentally friendly, cost-efficient and optimised for user comfort. For the first time the DGNB is also presenting certificates for sustainable hotel buildings. The German building materials trade is meeting up on Thursday, to hold its principal general meeting at BAU. The high point at this event will be the presentation of the Building Material Oscars. The Bavarian Engineers Day takes place traditionally on the Friday at BAU. This first event in the calendar of the Bavarian Chamber of Engineers is dedicated in 2011 to integrated planning and building.
