| Leighton Contractors alliance to upgrade Great Eastern Highway An alliance between Leighton Contractors, NRW Holdings and GHD has been awarded the contract for stage one of the Great Eastern Highway upgrade for Main Roads Western Australia. As part of the overall $225 million project, stage one involves upgrading 2.7 kilometres of the Great Eastern Highway to a six lane dual carriageway between Kooyong Road (near Graham Farmer Freeway) and Hardy Road. The value of the contract to Leighton Contractors is pending the final project scope and will be confirmed by mid-2011. Many of the project team were involved in successfully delivering the award-winning, 70 kilometre Kwinana Freeway extension and Forrest Highway three months ahead of schedule for Main Roads WA in September 2009. The upgrade will include a central median with u-turn facilities at key locations, on-road cycling facilities, continuous pedestrian paths, highway lighting, noise mitigation facilities for adjacent residences, and intelligent transport system features connected via fibre optic cabling to the Main Roads Traffic Operations Centre. Detailed design is expected to start later this month, with works scheduled to start in mid-2011. The project is expected to be complete by the end of 2013. write your comments about the article :: © 2010 Construction News :: home page |
