Atkins gets second win in a week for London 2012 enabling works

The London 2012 Olympic Park enabling works was given the Special Judges' Award at the British Construction Industry Awards in London. It is the second honour in a week for the project which was designed and managed by U.K.—based designer W.S. Atkins plc, following the award of the Institution of Civil Engineers' Edmund Hambly medal.

The Special Judges' Award is given to a project considered to be particularly inspirational. On presenting the award to Olympic Delivery Authority's (ODA) director of infrastructure and utilities, Simon Wright, the judges said that the fully integrated team delivered a world class job. They added that it had set high standards across sustainability, technical innovation, teamwork, safety and cultural initiatives.

The Gainsborough Flood Alleviation scheme was highly commended by the judges in the Small Civils category. Gainsborough, on the eastern bank of the lower River Trent, is particularly vulnerable to flooding due to the low-lying nature of the town. The project to reduce the flood risk to over 2,600 properties from a 1 in 70 annual chance event to a 1 in 200 event was commissioned by the Environment Agency. Atkins and its cost consultancy, Faithful+Gould, are part of the team which modified existing flood defences.

The Dubai Metro project was shortlisted for the international award. It was the largest infrastructure construction project in the world at its peak and currently the world's longest fully-automated driverless railway system. Atkins is the civil engineering designer.

The British Industry Construction Awards are seen as most prestigious in the annual construction industry calendar with over 180 projects submitted for judging. The Awards are a celebration of the quality demonstrated by the construction industry encouraging innovation, management best practice and team work.
