| Greater Tunis Rapid Rail Network The project to build a fast urban rail network (RFR) is part of an overall plan to upgrade and develop public transport in Greater Tunis to enable it to meet the current high demand and forecast growth in passenger traffic and, at the same time, to tackle the ever-increasing number of private vehicles. Under the contract signed on 26 August 2010 with the Tunis Rapid Rail Network Company, Paris-based Systra, in partnership with the Tunisian group, Studi, will manage construction of the first phase of the project for a period of 43 months. The first section will total 17.9 kilometers in length and consist of two lines with a common section from Tunis Ville (Barcelona Square station) to Saida Manoubia. Line D will include 9 stations from Tunis Ville to Gobaâ (11.5 km), while Line E will have 7 stations between Tunis Ville and Bougatfa/Sidi Hassine (6.4 km). The project also provides for a depot and workshop at Sidi Fathallah, two storage sidings at the Gobaâ and Bougatfa terminuses, construction of the Saida Manoubia tunnel, a 310-metre, twin-track rail tunnel and 14 other structures. Commissioning and launch of the first section is due in December 2015. When it is fully completed, the fast rail network will consist of 5 lines and 85 km, built on dedicated site. In addition to this, there will be seven LRT lines (including two brand new ones), three transport hubs in the city centre, and a bus network operating on separate bus lanes. The entire system is due to come into operation in 2021. write your comments about the article :: © 2010 Construction News :: home page |
