Bilfinger Berger completes tunnel section of Düsseldorf rail line

Bilfinger Berger, a Germany-based construction and services group, has completed the first phase of construction for the new Düsseldorf urban rail line one month ahead of schedule. The tunnel boring machine finished the 1.3-kilometer section between Elisabethstrasse and Kasernenstrasse in less than seven months. The tunnel lining made up of around 870 segment rings was also installed during the course of the tunneling work.

The 65-meter long and 1,300 ton tunnel boring machine will now be transported to the drive shaft at Corneliusplatz, where it will receive a complete overhaul in preparation for work on the tunnel to Wielandstraße expected to begin in April 2011. The techniques selected for the construction of the tunnel sections and the five underground train stations will help keep traffic disruption to a minimum during the construction phase.

With a total length of 3.4 kilometers, the underground rail line will replace several surface tram lines. The €300 million project will significantly reduce the burden on traffic in the inner city when it goes into service in 2015.
