| The Covenant of Mayors at ZeroEmission Rome 2010 During ZeroEmission Rome, on 10 September, the conference entitled The Covenant of Mayors in Italy: the progress of the Sustainable Energy Action Plan will take place. The one-day conference, organized in collaboration with the Ministry of the Environment and the engineering company In+, will review the situation and the developments of this important project. Mayors, provincial presidents and municipal officials will be present. Thanks to wind energy, photovoltaics, thermal and thermo-dynamic solar energy, geothermics, energy savings, the carbon credit market and CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) technologies, the green economy is striding ahead and, other than gaining a consistent portion of the market, is now recognized as one of the most solid opportunities to leave the crisis considering that renewable energies create work and new outlooks of development that are compatible with the environment. This is why the European community has, for some time now, been investing and encouraging programmes and projects aimed at fighting climate changes. This is confirmed by the Sustainable Energy for Europe - SEE campaign, launched by the European Commission in 2005, which is the most important initiative in support of the ambitious aims regarding environmental and energy sustainability that Europe has set for 2020. "In our country, " explains Antonio Lumicisi of the Ministry of the Environment and Protection of the Land and Sea and Coordinator of the SEE campaign in Italy, "there are more than 120 active partnerships: local bodies, associations, energy agencies, research institutes, private companies, financial institutes, etc., all with the intention of reaching the now famous "20-20-20". This aim is not easy to reach, " continued Lumicisi, "but an important contribution will certainly come from the great number of cities that are taking part in the Covenant of Mayors, the initiative that, launched in 2008 during the SEE campaign, involves local governments in the fight against climate change. More than 1, 700 European cities are now registered - about 500 in Italy - all aware of the fact that on average, more than 50% of energy produced at global level is consumed on their territory. Clear and synergic policies between national and local governments is essential if we want to be successful in the fight against climate changes, the real challenge of this century." Italy is doing its part very well and is now the second country in Europe, after Spain, to have the highest number of members, ratified formally by the approval of a City Council deliberation regarding the commitment to reduce local emissions by more than 20% by 2020, in line with the aims of the European Union. This and much more will be discussed from 8 to 10 September at the Fiera di Roma during ZeroEmission Rome 2010 the reference event for all companies and operators interested in the development of renewable energies, emission trading and environmental sustainability which will also include a day dedicated to the Covenant of Mayors. The official day of the SEE Programme, in fact, which will be held 10 September, intends to take stock of the situation in Italy and to provide a moment of meeting and comparison. write your comments about the article :: © 2010 Construction News :: home page |
