| The fastest trains on continent enter service in Johannesburg With the production and installation of 25 escalators and twelve elevators, ThyssenKrupp Elevator is already one of the most important suppliers to the South African "Gautrain" rail project. The first section of the route runs from OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg to Sandton in the north of the city. The journey takes less than 15 minutes on the new train, which can travel at up to 160 kilometers per hour – the first of its kind on the African continent. In addition to Sandton station, which is located 45 meters underground, further stops are the ground level Marlboro station and the elevated Rhodesfield station, which have also been fitted with systems from ThyssenKrupp Elevator. They enable passengers and soccer fans to access the platforms and exits quickly, safely and conveniently. ThyssenKrupp Elevator will also be involved in the construction of the second section of the route extending to the South African capital, Pretoria. The company has already been awarded a contract for a further five stations comprising a total of 24 escalators and 27 elevators. Once completed, the "Gautrain" rail network will be around 80 kilometers long. The journey time from Johannesburg to Pretoria will then be more than halved, taking approx. 40 minutes. That makes the new high-speed train a genuine alternative to the busy roads in this densely populated region. write your comments about the article :: © 2010 Construction News :: home page |
