| Terraced house in Buchengasse The 10,000 m2 former grounds of the company Tarbuk in Favoriten, the 10th district of Vienna, is now home to a housing project encompassing 250 apartments and a nursery. Designed by the architects' office Rüdiger Lainer + Partner and sponsored by the city of Vienna, the housing complex in Buchengasse comprises of four blocks with six to eleven storeys each. The apartments have very flexible floor plans which enable the tenants to personalise their own space. Completed by the developer Heimbau & Eisenhof, Vienna, the positioning of the apartment blocks creates a sequence of several courtyards. The deft arrangement of the structures and different manners of exploiting the available space mean that even in this heavily urbanised district the inhabitants will never be left wanting for more light and air. All apartments have private open spaces. The design thus grants the wish of many Viennese to have their own exterior space in the city centre. This can take the form of a balcony, patio or roof terrace depending on the location of the apartment. It was decided to integrate glazing from the market-leading system developer and manufacturer Solarlux from Bissendorf, therefore enabling the use of the balcony not only on sunny days. The projections made of prefabricated concrete are glazed on all sides and thus offer optimal wind and weather protection even in the highest storeys. Each 3 m x 3 m balcony is encompassed by 16 glass panels. At the sides the glazing abuts the balustrade, where it is mounted on the robust guard rail with galvanised steel mounting links. The balcony glazing has no vertical sections in order to ensure undisturbed views. There are no limits for the illumination of the adjacent living areas. Not only does the glazing extend the period of use of the balcony, it also has a soundproofing role. The open joints between the glass panels provide the necessary constant ventilation. At warmer times of the year, the glazing can be opened flexibly over the entire front and parked at the sides, where it occupies very little space. The convincing integration of the exterior spaces as a private open area for improved quality of life and living in the city was also reflected in the acknowledgement the project received during the awarding of the "best architects 10" architectural prize. The terraced house in Buchengasse was awarded the gold award in the Home-building category. write your comments about the article :: © 2010 Construction News :: home page |
