| Washington Bypass project earns award for innovation The innovative development of the top-down construction technique used to construct the Highway 17 Washington Bypass in North Carolina earned Flatiron the Innovative Transportation Solutions Award presented by the Women's Transportation Seminar. Flatiron received the award during the WTS 12th Annual Awards Banquet and Transportation Reception on March 31 in Raleigh, N.C. WTS recognized Flatiron for its use of the world's first application of the pile-driving operations from an erection gantry, which not only saved time and cost, but also eliminated the need for large cranes and temporary access trestles, significantly reducing environmental disturbances to the fragile wetlands below. The design-build project by the Flatiron-United joint venture was originally slated for completion in November 2010, but was completed eight months early. The project was part of a 15.5-mile program to upgrade the corridor of U.S. 17 to expressway standards. write your comments about the article :: © 2010 Construction News :: home page |
