"Green" alternatives to standard electrical switches

Leviton Manufacturing is urging consumers to choose "green" alternatives to standard electrical switches when purchasing or installing these devices in residential and commercial buildings. Leviton's "Make the Switch" campaign kicks off on April 22nd, the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, and provides consumer education on lighting control products that can easily substitute in place of traditional light switches to conserve electricity, trim energy bills and preserve the environment.

"Our eco system is in far greater peril than it was four decades ago when Earth Day was first celebrated. Climate change, pollution, landfill overload and destruction of the earth's natural resources form a toxic combination that jeopardizes us and future generations. Today, we have an unprecedented opportunity to build a clean energy economy that will help protect our environment if we each do our part to reduce our carbon footprint," said Jay Sherman, Director of Residential Marketing for Leviton.

Through its "Make the Switch" awareness campaign, Leviton advocates that consumers put into practice the following easy-to-implement measures to reduce carbon emissions and green house gases (GHGs), while saving on their utility bills:

• Install compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) in place of incandescent light bulbs in homes and offices.
• Further increase the energy savings benefits of CFLs by installing dimmable CFLs and a CFL dimmer switch.
• Depending on the specific application, replace residential light switches through the home with a dimmer, electronic or programmable timer or occupancy sensor.
• Use other energy-conserving specialty products such as Energy Star -rated devices for closet lighting.
• Remember to turn off lighting when leaving a room or an area.
