Flatiron begins Glenwood Canyon rockslide damage repairs

US civil engineering firm Flatiron began work March 22 to repair I-70 in Glenwood Canyon after a rockslide damaged the roadway. The March 8 rockslide was classified by Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter as a disaster emergency. It punched holes in a bridge and dumped boulders the size of semi-trucks on the highway, closing a 17-mile stretch. The largest hole was 10 feet by 20 feet. Officials said about 20 boulders were scattered on the highway, with the largest weighing 66 tons.

On March 23, Flatiron's crew uncovered the girder, which was buried under the rubble. Colorado Department of Transportation officials will inspect the girder and design a repair.

As the low-bid contract to repair the damage, Flatiron's work will repair 400 linear feet of the westbound barrier, 150 linear feet of the eastbound steel bridge barrier, design-build fix of 460 square feet of retaining wall, 500 tons of base course and 400 tons of patching asphalt. Based on the bid, the cost of repairs should total $860, 417. Repairs should be completed in 55 days.

Historically, the same section of the Glenwood Canyon has required multiple bouts of repair work through the years as it tends to get hit harder than the rest of the canyon by rock slides. A rockslide in 2004 that originated about ¼ mile east of the March 2010 rockslide took out the same section of roadway.

Flatiron also is doing work in the Glenwood Springs area for the Grand Avenue Pedestrian Bridge Deck Replacement. Construction began on Feb. 22, and consists of removing and replacing an existing 10-foot cast-in-place concrete deck with pre-cast concrete panels. The panels will cover the entire 530-linear-feet bridge span over I-70, Union Pacific Railroad tracks and the Colorado River. The project's contract amount totals $581,000 and should be complete by the end of May.
