Cegelec to renovate Lyon’s Croix-Rousse tunnel

French electrical engineering company Cegelec will renovate installations in Lyon's 1.8-kilometre Croix-Rousse tunnel and equip the new safety gallery to be built parallel to the existing tunnel.

The 42 million euros equipment portion of this design and construction contract will be carried out in a consortium with GTIE over the next four years. It mainly concerns renovation of electrical wiring, ventilation, signalling and control systems in the current dual two-lane carriageway tunnel, which was commissioned in 1952.

This heavy refurbishment contract also calls for the construction of a second tube parallel to the first. In addition to serving as a safety gallery, the new tunnel will provide an additional roadway between the Rhône and the Saône for public transport and for cyclists, pedestrians and other green transport users. The first tunnel more than one kilometre long built specifically for this type of use, it will include special lighting as well as artwork projections on the vault.

The Urban Community of Lyon already contracted with Cegelec to carry out repair work and safety upgrades on the Croix-Rousse tunnel back in 2005.
