| Vinyl siding for 23 year-old North Carolina apartment complex Last year, Walden at Greenfields, an apartment complex in Chapel Hill, N.C., was in serious need of a facelift, with an exterior that had faded from the elegance mirrored in the complex's name. Walden at Greenfields owner, King Properties Inc., of Richmond, Va., hired Coast to Coast Commercial Enterprises Inc., also of Richmond, to do a complete exterior renovation of the now 23-year-old complex, which included new roofing, doors, windows, chimneys, trim and siding. Much attention was particularly given to the selection of the siding, as it would contribute a great deal to the overall curb appeal of the complex. "A colorful, traditional appearance was of utmost importance to the customer, as was having a low-maintenance material," says Larry Tolleson, co-owner of Coast to Coast Commercial Enterprises. "We've used a lot of the CertainTeed vinyl siding products over the years, and MainStreet and Cedar Impressions were perfect for this project." With guidance from Coast to Coast Commercial Enterprises, King Properties chose CertainTeed MainStreet Single 6-1/2-inch Beaded vinyl siding in Cypress and CertainTeed Cedar Impressions Double 7-inch Straight Edge Rough-Split Shake polymer siding in Buckskin. The project called for 2,000 squares of MainStreet and 500 squares of Cedar Impressions, supplied by the Richmond branch of Allied Building Products. Coast to Coast Commercial Enterprises began work in March 2008, removing the original Masonite siding. The siding had faded badly and allowed water infiltration over the years, leading to OSB sheathing deterioration in some sections. After replacing the rotted sheathing, and applying a housewrap, the crew installed MainStreet siding on the buildings. On the gables of the buildings, the crew installed Cedar Impressions to provide an attractive contrast to the MainStreet siding. In addition to the two siding products, the crew also installed CertainTeed vinyl soffit and 3-1/2-inch vinyl window lineals. The entire renovation was completed in May and has received excellent reviews. Both the contractor and property owner were impressed with the new siding. "It looks beautiful," Tolleson says. "You don't think of vinyl or polymer when you look at this siding — you think of real wood." "I'm very pleased," says Emily Carter, Walden at Greenfields property manager for King Properties. "The colors are absolutely gorgeous and complement each other very well. After this renovation, we've heard from people who think Walden at Greenfields is brand new." Featuring a Class 1(A) fire rating and 17 low-gloss colors, MainStreet offers consistent quality and classic woodgrain texture with low maintenance. Its RigidForm 160 technology has been tested to withstand windload pressures of up to 160 miles per hour, and it is backed by a lifetime-limited warranty. Cedar Impressions polymer shake siding is molded from real cedar shingles, giving it natural cedar shake texture with a low-gloss finish and making it the most natural-looking cedar shingle siding available. It is virtually maintenance-free and is backed by a lifetime-limited warranty. Offering a long-lasting, durable product, CertainTeed vinyl and polymer siding requires no painting or caulking, thus contributing to the sustainability of any project. In addition, CertainTeed vinyl siding products help building professionals qualify toward credits for The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) through the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and the National Association of Home Builders' (NAHB) Green Building Guidelines. write your comments about the article :: © 2009 Construction News :: home page |
