New color, accessory, sizes and bundling for Symphony shingles

CertainTeed Corporation has added a new color, accessory, sizes and bundling to its Symphony Composite Slate Shingles Series, a composite roofing shingle that mimics the look and feel of natural slate, but is lighter, more durable and a fraction of the price. The Symphony product line has also earned the designation as an ENERGY STAR Qualified Product, a label given to products that use less energy, save money and help protect the environment.

CertainTeed is expanding the Symphony color palette to include Evergreen, a mixture of two green-shaded shingles with the textures and contours of natural slate. The Evergreen shingles are available in standard 12-inch pre-blended bundles or multiple-width bundles of 6-, 9- and 12-inch slates. Symphony shingles in Colonial Gray and Capital Blend, which were previously only available in 12-inch bundles, are also now available in multiple-width bundles. For intricate roof designs, the multiple-width bundles do not require on-site sorting, easing the installation process. Symphony also now includes a hip and ridge accessory to complement the slate shingles for a finished, streamlined appearance.

"Symphony orchestrates the ideal cross between art and science with a synthetic slate shingle," says Bob Gardiner, vice president of marketing CertainTeed Roofing. "The expansion of Symphony's color and size will provide roofing contractors and homeowners with new ways of achieving graduated and random patterns that complement architectural and historical detail."

Symphony's contractor-friendly design and lighter weight makes it easy to install. It requires no special installation tools and can be fastened by hand-nailing or pneumatic nail gun, without cracking. It has excellent weathering qualities, withstands foot traffic and cold temperatures, and resists curling and buckling — unlike traditional slate that can crack under the weight of a misstep or shatter when temperatures dip too low. In addition, the shingles are shipped in pre-blended pallets, so contractors won't have to spend time sorting colors at the jobsite, and can begin installing the roof more quickly.

Mark Kimry, president of MK Custom Roofing in Fort Worth, Texas, is currently installing the shingles in Colonial Gray on a high-end condominium complex in Los Colinas, Texas. Called Avalon Square, the three-story condominiums are part of K. Hovnanian Homes and will be completed in 2010.

"We have enjoyed installing Symphony on Avalon Square," Kimry says. "Unlike other slate shingles, they come pre-blended, and you don't have to shuffle or sort them, which saves us time and money on the jobsite. We have also received many compliments about their look and resemblance to real slate. Symphony has added beauty to this project."

For superior color stability, Symphony features a UV fade-resistant surface technology. The shingles are backed by CertainTeed's legacy of quality and innovation, as well as a 50-year limited, transferable warranty. In addition to ENERGY STAR qualification, Symphony can help building professionals meet the requirements of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program and other green building standards.
