Costain announces a major project win

The UK's oldest builder, Costain announces that it has been awarded a £397 million contract by Viridor Laing (Greater Manchester) Ltd to design and build municipal waste treatment infrastructure as part of the Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority's (GMWDA's) PFI Waste and Recycling Contract, which is the largest municipal waste contract in Western Europe.

The project, which will cost £3 billion to complete, will treat the 1.3 million tonnes of municipal waste the GMWDA handles annually. The project comprises the design, construction and commissioning of a total of 44 different facilities spread across 26 locations.

Serving a resident population of over 2 million people, GMWDA is the largest waste disposal authority in England. It provides waste disposal services to approximately 958,000 households and handles around 5% of the UK's national municipal waste.
