Italy's Impregilo announces projects in South Africa

Italian builder Impregilo, in conjunction with CMC of Ravenna and a local firm is to build a hydroelectric plant in South Africa. Overall, the project, in which Impregilo has an interest of 40%, is worth approximately 600 million euro.

The "Ingula Pumped Storage Scheme" provides for the construction of a generation and pumping plant with total installed power of 1100 MW, to generate electricity during peak demand periods. During off-peak hours, the water will be pumped back to the upper reservoir for re-use.

Impregilo and its partners are responsible for the plant's underground civil works, including installation of 4 pumps/turbines, underground waterways, levelling shafts, penstocks, the powerhouse and transformer caverns, access tunnels and the upper and lower reservoirs.

The new plant is to be built for Eskom Holdings (a power producer and distributor in South Africa, and the leading energy producer across the African continent). It is situated in the Republic of South Africa, on the border between KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State, about 350 kilometres south-east of Johannesburg.
