Flatiron projects win awards for construction innovation

Flatiron, one of the largest transportation and infrastructure contractors in North America, won two awards for innovation from the Alberta Ministry of Transportation for new highway projects in Alberta.

The Minister's Award for Technical Transportation Innovation recognized a redesign of two major interchanges on the Northwest Anthony Henday Drive project in Edmonton. The design improves the constructability, shortens the construction timeline and decreases project costs by more than $10 million. The project is a new 13-mile portion of a ring road around Edmonton, Alberta, slated for completion in 2011.

The Ministry also recognized the Northeast Stoney Trail (Calgary Ring Road) with the 2009 Process Innovation Award. Flatiron and its partners developed a new method for multiple stakeholders to review and approve drainage plans, condensing into a few months a process that might have taken several years. The drainage plan included 24 ponds and had to maintain the overall drainage pattern in the surrounding areas.

The Honorable Luke Ouellette, Minister of Alberta Transportation, presented the awards to the team on March 23 at the 12th annual AT-ARHCA-CEA Transportation Conference, hosted by Alberta Transportation, Alberta Roadbuilders and Heavy Construction Association, and the Consulting Engineers of Alberta, in Red Deer, Alberta.
