Climate project in Finland

Five municipalities in Finland have started a climate project that is unique even from an international perspective. BaseN is involved in the research project with its real time measurement and monitoring technology. The first measuring points in the city of Uusikaupunki will be installed during this spring.

The CANEMU project aims to create tools and procedures to let Finnish municipalities help mitigate climate change and promote the adoption of climate-friendly technologies. The procedures developed within the project will be applicable in other municipalities in Finland and elsewhere in the world.

The project will start by measuring and analyzing electricity, heating and water consumption in households, companies and organizations in Uusikaupunki. At the moment BaseN is researching the first sites selected by Uusikaupunki.

- We are proud to be involved in climate change mitigation, says Project Manager Katri Oinonen from BaseN. Our real time measurements allow detailed, live analysis and allow us to note and rank actions that provide the largest energy savings, she adds.

For the first time in Finland, the activities of municipalities and the businesses and people within them are examined in the same study from the perspective of the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The other participating municipalities in addition to Uusikaupunki are Mynämäki, Kuhmoinen, Padasjoki and Parikkala. The objective is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions more than is required by EU goals and quicker than has been agreed.

The project will search for effective tools that municipalities can use in their efforts to check climate change. For the municipalities, the short-term goal is to find the central measures that can be used for cost-efficient reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. A toolbox of suitable new measures and technical solutions will be produced for municipalities, as well as analyses of measures already implemented. The long-term goals will reach as far as 20 years into the future, and the ultimate goal is a carbon-neutral municipality.

The CANEMU project is led by the Finnish Environment Institute and is based on cooperation between businesses, researchers, and public administration.
