Grohmann puts new Manitowoc crawler crane to work in Germany

A 250 t capacity Manitowoc crawler crane and a Grove GMK5095 all-terrain crane worked together to repair a wind turbine at a park in Fiefbergen, northern Germany, close to the city of Kiel. KranAgentur Werner, a sales agent in Germany for Manitowoc and Grove cranes, supplied the cranes to lifting specialist Grohmann GmbH who oversaw the repair job. Frank Lichtenberg, general manager at KranAgentur Werner, said that the Model 15000 is the largest Manitowoc delivered to the German market in recent years. "This crane is the biggest Manitowoc crawler crane to enter our market for quite some time," he said. "It is already doing great things, and I believe that demand for this size of crane will continue to increase in Germany."

The crawler crane was rigged with 87.5 m of main boom and 159 t of counterweight. The first task for the crane was to remove the hub and blades, which weighed 33 t. These were lifted at an 18 m radius and the lift was made from a hook height of 84 m. Then, at ground level, the Manitowoc (with the GMK5095 assisting), turned the blades from the vertical into a horizontal position. With the hub and blades removed, the 23 t gearbox was lifted down. This lift also took place at an 18 m radius and from a height of 84 m.

The Grove GMK5095 (known as the GMK5115 in the U.S. with a capacity of 115 USt) worked as an assist crane to the Model 15000, providing rigging and lifting assistance. The five-axle GMK5095 has a maximum tip height of 83 m.
