Zumtobel Group opens new plant in Spennymoor, UK

Austrian lighting equipment maker Zumtobel celebrated the official opening of its new plant in Spennymoor in the North of England. The new production facility covers 40,000 square metres and comprises a lighting factory for the Thorn brand and a manufacturing facility for the TridonicAtco brand's luminaire components business. Representing a total investment of around GBP 32 million, this is the largest investment in the UK lighting manufacturing and training since the 1940s. Project management and construction of the new plant was handled by the GMI Construction Group with whom Thorn Lighting Limited has concluded a long-term leasing agreement for the use of the building. As part of the total sum, Thorn has invested an amount of GBP 1.3 million in the new Thorn Academy of Light, a customer and staff training centre covering approximately 2,000 square metres and forming part of the new building. Thorn sold off the previous production site in nearby Merrington Lane to a UK-based property developer back in December 2008.
