CDM/CAPE takes home Guam construction award

The CDM/CAPE Joint Venture was recognized with a 2008 Excellence in Construction award by the Guam Contractors' Association for the Commercial Construction: $25 million to $100 million category. This award acknowledges CDM/CAPE's exemplary performance in the construction of the base exchange (BX) shopping center for the Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) at Andersen Air Force Base.

The building's construction is part of a larger effort by AAFES to adapt and improve the base in Guam to meet the demands of additional personnel, who are being relocated from Japan. Nearly seven times larger than the facility it replaced, the new BX was constructed within a short, 18-month timeframe. CDM/CAPE delivered the project safely and within budget, despite the numerous challenges presented by its remote island location. In addition to providing a modern, comfortable, and exciting shopping and dining destination for the base's 8,000 residents, the BX also supports the growing local community by creating a number of new employment opportunities.

CDM/CAPE organized a team of more than 20 local construction subcontractors for the project to overcome the island's relatively short supply of labor. Materials and equipment, also scarce, were ordered and delivered by ship or by plane. Team leaders carefully chose a construction schedule that accommodated for the area's typhoon season, and resulting weather delays. The precast, tilt-up panel, vertical construction approach contributed to the project's overall success. On September 10, 2008, the building's grand opening was attended by more than a thousand cheering people.
