DB orders 15 ICE trains from Siemens

Deutsche Bahn is investing in the future and has ordered 15 international high-speed ICE trains from Siemens. The CEOs of Deutsche Bahn AG, Hartmut Mehdorn, and of Siemens AG, Peter Löscher, signed the contract for a volume of roughly EUR 500 million in the Bahntower in Berlin. The ICE is built at the Siemens plant in Krefeld-Uerdingen and will safeguard a total of approx. 2000 jobs in Germany.

The ICE 3 consists of 8 individual coaches and can carry up to 485 passengers. It will be equipped with redimensioned axle shafts. With traction power of 8000 kilowatt (approx. 11, 000 metric horsepower), it can run at speeds of up to 320 km/h. The first vehicles are scheduled to go into operation in December 2011 and the first trains will be available for in-depth testing in summer 2011. All 15 multiple units are to be delivered by 2012.
