| South Korea's first ever immersed tunnel Daewoo Engineering and Construction has cast the deepest immersed tunnel segment for what will be the world's deepest roadway tunnel. This latest milestone involved a 24-hour continuous casting of 2,260 cubic metres of concrete, 100 workers, two concrete batching plants and 13 trucks. The segment is 26.5m wide by 10m high and 22.5m long. The Busan Geoje Fixed Link Project will be South Korea's first ever immersed tunnel. It will carry traffic at up to 48m below sea level. The 8.2km (5 mile) crossing includes a 3.2km (2 mile) undersea roadway tunnel and two cable-stayed bridges. The project has been designed by Korean contractor Daewoo Engineering and Construction and the Danish company COWI. Halcrow's Don Fraser is providing technical expertise to this challenging project. Currently based on site in South Korea, Don is providing advice on design and construction, contract and contract strategy and project organisation. write your comments about the article :: © 2008 Construction News :: home page |
