| Lifts, escalators and 'Universal design' presented by BAU BAU 2009 will be featuring for the second time a special exhibition on the subject of lifts and escalators. Architects and planners are interested in concepts on how lifts and escalators can be integrated into large building complexes, in particular for renovation and modernisation projects. The trade association of lift and escalator manufacturers affiliated in the VDMA (Germany´s engineering federation) is the conceptual sponsor behind the special exhibition of lifts and escalators at BAU 2009. 'Universal design' is about creating an environment that suits all people, regardless of their age, physical condition or disability. For architects and planners this means ensuring that homes are designed so that people with or without a handicap can live in them comfortably and independently. BAU 2009 is taking up this theme and, together with the 'Leben ohne Barrieren' network, is putting on a special exhibition. It´s title: 'Info Garden – Universal Design'. The special display is set out as an 'info garden', featuring kitchens and bathrooms, a central, open-plan café, and various booths, portals and presentation areas. It looks at the design of the various rooms in a home, but also at new forms of living, for example, in multi-generation houses. Other themes include: Control and automation, lighting and designing outdoor spaces. One idea is a sideboard with two side panels that slide out to create a fully functional kitchen; this unit, which fits in every living room, is certainly a good solution for older people living in small apartments. Kitchen fitters Horst-Küchen have designed this barrier-free kitchen for people living on their own and are presenting it in the special display at BAU from 12 to 17 January at the New Munich Trade Fair Centre. For people with limited mobility, who have to stop frequently for a rest while walking, Erlau has developed a heated outside bench. This enables them to stop for long rests in the park or in front of their house, even in the cold months of the year. write your comments about the article :: © 2008 Construction News :: home page |
