Thorn provides lighting for majestic mosque in Yemen

Thorn Lighting, a brand of Austrian lighting equipment maker Zumtobel Group, has provided a lighting solution to the value of EUR 400,000 for the Al Saleh mosque, one of the most prominent buildings in Yemen. Located in the Yemeni capital of Sana'a, the Al Saleh mosque cost EUR 45 million to build. Covering over 27,000 square metres, the mosque can accommodate 44,000 worshippers and impressively combines Yemeni architecture with classic Islamic elements such as six minarets, each reaching a height of 100 metres.

For Thorn, the project was the result of nearly eight years effort, from initial brief to completion. Working closely with local sales partner Al Zaghir, Thorn was responsible for providing the lighting for the entire interior and the outdoor area, putting in place a spectacular lighting concept comprising 2,700 fittings to the value of over EUR 400,000. To ensure that the splendid building is displayed in the best possible light while sensitively accentuating the architectural features, Thorn first employed 3D design software to visualise the lighting effects before implementing the optimal solution using a combination of floodlights, downlights, road lanterns and spotlights.
