| Caterpillar 904H compact wheel loader The new Caterpillar 904H compact wheel loader provides a productive combination of power, versatility and operator amenities. With 52 net horsepower (39 kW) and an operating weight of 9,900 pounds (4490 kg), the 904H replaces the popular 904B. The new loader features a new engine, new axles, articulated steering, two-speed hydrostatic drive, powerful Z-bar loader linkage, universal coupler (compatible with skid-steer-loader work tools), new operator's station and fresh styling—including a new hood, counterweight and non-metallic fenders. Designed for reduced exhaust emissions, the 904H uses the turbocharged MHI S4Q2 diesel engine, which meets Interim Tier 4 regulations. The new engine powers a closed loop, single path hydrostatic transmission that works in combination with a frame mounted gear box and mechanical axles. The newly designed axles provide more ground clearance and can be equipped with optional locking differentials to help the 904H power through adverse ground conditions. Available with either cab or canopy, the new 904H operator station is designed for comfort and convenience—featuring ample space, enhanced visibility and redesigned controls. Optional performance features, including ride control and creeper control, allow more precise operation of the machine. Routine maintenance for the 904H is simplified with a tilt-up engine enclosure for easy access to service points, centralized lubrication, hinged oil cooler and standard oil sampling valves for quickly sampling engine and drive-train fluids. The new machine's Z-bar loader linkage provides ample lift height and reach, while generating high bucket breakout forces (8,003 pounds / 35.6 kN), allowing the 904H to take on difficult loading and lifting chores. Wide spacing of the robust lift arms and the geometry of the loader linkage yield exceptionally good visibility to the work site and to the work tool. The 904H has a maximum hydraulic lift capacity of 7,464 pounds (33.2 kN). The 904H is available with a choice of couplers, a standard mechanical version or an optional hydraulic version, which allows switching non-powered work tools from the cab. The universal-style coupler is designed to handle a variety of buckets, pallet forks and a wide selection of standard-flow work tools available for Caterpillar skid steer loaders and multi terrain loaders, including brooms, cold planers, augers, stump grinders and trenchers. The versatility of the 904H allows it to be integrated easily into skid-steer-loader fleets. The standard auxiliary hydraulic system, with a rated flow of 22 gpm (83 L/min) at a relief pressure of 3,000 psi (207 bar), generates ample hydraulic horsepower for efficiently operating powered work tools. The drive system provides smooth acceleration and deceleration, plus precise inching operation—features that enhance machine control and reduce operator fatigue. The optional creeper control complements the auxiliary hydraulic system by allowing the 904H to travel at low ground speeds in order to maintain precise control of powered work tools, while the engine runs at high speed to develop maximum hydraulic horsepower for efficient tool operation. An optional hand throttle further adds to controllability. New for the 904H are optional locking differentials—for both the front axle and oscillating rear axle. Compared with the limited-slip differentials available for the 904B, the locking differentials reflect a simpler design, having fewer wearing components and providing positive engagement. Benefits of the new differentials include enhanced traction with reduced tire wear and reduced fuel consumption. As an added advantage, the differential locks can be engaged on-the-go at speeds up to 3.1 mph (5 kph). write your comments about the article :: © 2008 Construction News :: home page |
