| Zumtobel and Cree accelerate LED lighting revolution across Europe Austrian lighting equipment maker Zumtobel Group and Cree, a NASDAQ-listed US company and the global market leader for high-performance LEDs, have agreed that the Zumtobel will take a Cree downlight based on pioneering technology, adapted for the European market, include it in its existing portfolio and market it exclusively in Europe and selected export markets through the group's brands. The downlight will serve as a basis for two product families for the Zumtobel and Thorn brands and will be fine-tuned to match the respective brand in collaboration with Cree. Zumtobel has taken its cooperation with Cree that began in the spring of 2008 onto a new level. The underlying aim of the closer collaboration is to foster the proliferation of LED technology in the professional lighting sector. Since its acquisition of US-based LED Lighting Fixtures (now Cree LLS) in February of this year, Cree has for the first time featured not only LED chips in the highest brightness classes but also LED downlights in its product range. The downlight from Cree brings the Zumtobel Group access to LED luminaires with technical characteristics that have never before been commercially available. In the past it was not possible to efficiently reproduce the pleasant light colors of incandescent bulbs with LEDs. Now, in a single luminaire, the new downlight combines a warm light color, consistent light quality, a designed service life of 50,000 hours (as compared to approximately 1,000 hours for an incandescent bulb) and outstanding energy efficiency, exceeding that of compact fluorescent downlights. The sale of the Cree downlight via the Zumtobel and Thorn brands is scheduled to commence in mid November 2008. The minimum annual sales target is set at 50,000 units. write your comments about the article :: © 2008 Construction News :: home page |
