| Hochtief says new orders rose Hochtief, Germany's largest builder, has announced new orders as of June 30, 2008 were up 34.8 percent on their prior-year total, at EUR 12.33 billion (H1 2007: EUR 9.14 billion). The increase resulted notably from the group's international activities with major contracts in the Asia-Pacific region, the positive business performance in Europe and growth in new orders from Hochtief Americas. Work done increased by 14.8 percent compared with the prior-year period, to EUR 10.22 billion (H1 2007: EUR 8.90 billion). Hochtief's order backlog consequently grew to EUR 31.91 billion as of the reporting date, up 24.5 percent on the prior-year period (H1 2007: EUR 25.63 billion) and marking a new all-time high. The group's growth was also reflected in a further rise in external sales, which increased by 14.7 percent on the prior-year period to EUR 9.06 billion (H1 2007: EUR 7.9 billion). Operating earnings (EBITA) more than doubled compared with the prior-year period, to EUR 356.2 million (H1 2007: EUR 175.8 million). Profit before taxes improved by no less than 60.7 percent to EUR 292.2 million (H1 2007: EUR 181.8 million). Consolidated net profit grew exceptionally strongly, by EUR 65.2 million to EUR 79.0 million (H1 2007: EUR 13.8 million).
