Premiere of The Design Annual as part of the new Decorate Life

From 4 to 7 July, around 80 internationally renowned manufacturers, designers and architects transformed Frankfurt's 'Festhalle' into fascinating living areas of the highest quality for the third time under the motto, "Life, living, working: the finest design of our age". 8,500 trade and private visitors came during the four days to exchange information, gain inspiration and see for themselves how top brands interpreted the theme of this year's event, 'inside: showtime'. For the first time, The Design Annual was held together with three international trade fairs – Tendence Autumn + Winter, Collectione Preview Spring + Summer and Outdoor Living – within the framework of the Decorate Life combined show.

The designers of this year's showcase were Tobias Rehberger, one of Germany's top contemporary artists, and installation and video artist Claus Richter. Taking up the motto, "inside:showtime", they transformed the spectator balcony of the Festhalle into a wonderland of imaginative objects – with flying cakes, crying trees, lost giraffes, talking clocks, tasty lighthouses and flute-playing owls.

The focal point of their multi-room installation was a theatre where renowned designers and artists staged the complementary programme. The design dialogue was rounded off by lectures, panel discussions and numerous talks.

Messe Frankfurt holds The Design Annual annually in collaboration with Stylepark AG. As curator of the show, Stylepark is responsible for content-related concept and theme-based aspects of the event.

"Life, living, working: the finest design of our age". This was the motto chosen by Messe Frankfurt in 2006, when they developed their totally revolutionary event format for the premiere of The Design Annual, a format incomparable to that of traditional trade fairs, congresses or public fairs. The Design Annual is a discussion–oriented event featuring specially selected products. Instead of a conventional hall layout, The Design Annual has an exhibition concept that picks up on the theme of the individual event. Due to the holiday season in Germany, 1,500 fewer visitors attended this year's event than in 2007.

The next Decorate Life combined autumn show will be held in Frankfurt am Main from 3 to 7 July 2009.
